For this blog post, you are to come up with actors and actresses YOU think would play the part of various characters if you were directing a 2009 film version of PYGMALION. You need to fill the following roles AND justify why you chose the actors you did for each (for instance, you want to give reasoning as to why a certain actor would be good to play a particular character from the text). Here are the characters:
1. Eliza
2. Higgins
3. Pickering
4. Alfred Doolittle
5. Freddy
6. Mrs. Higgins
*Again, don't just list an actor for each character. Write an explanation justifying each choice. This blog post is due before 6 AM Tuesday, May 5th.
27 comments:
1. Eliza-Kirsten Dunst
To begin with, I believe that she would be a good Eliza due her somewhat crooked teeth and plain-jane pretty. You could see a significant change in her appearance just as Eliza experiences in her transformation. In addition, Kirsten has a sarcastic sense of humor that matches Eliza's, but she can also play the vulnerable part. She also has very expressive facial features that could portray Eliza's indignation and overall character, very well.
2. Higgins-Johnny Depp
In many of his past roles, Johnny Depp has excelled in characters that are a little odd, such as Captain Jack Sparrow and Sweeney Todd. He has that dark, cynical humor that is similar to Higgins'
3. Pickering-Heath Ledger
He would complement Johnny Depp's character extremely well because he can play the tag-a-long friend that agrees with everything Higgins says, yet he still has a likable quality that he would be able to portray when he kindly reaches out to Eliza, even thought Higgins doesn't agree.
4. Alfred Doolittle-Jack Black
Jack Black is very scruffy and dirty and has a gross quality about him that makes him seem sleazy, just as Mr. Doolittle seems in his description. Eliza's dad has somewhat of a sense of humor and Jack Black can definitely do comedy.
5. Freddy-Jim Sturgess
Jim Sturgess is boyishly handsome with a genuine smile and a big heart. He can play the part of the underdog for Eliza's affections. He can look like the lost puppy that would just follow her around completely love sick. His character could also be easily trampled on and order around by his Freddy's mother and sister and the audience would pull for him to get Eliza in the end because of all this.
6. Mrs. Higgins-Meryl Streep
She has a haughty attitude in many of her roles and could act as the aloof mother to Higgins very well, yet could hint at a fostering tendency that she could express toward Eliza. Meryl Streep also somewhat resembles Johnny Depp and could be a believable mother to him. However, I think that it is more important for Johnny Depp to play Higgins since he is the most vital role other than Eliza so, with those restrictions, Meryl Streep would be the best choice for his mother, acting and appearance wise.
1. Eliza – Kristen Stewart
I think Kristen Stewart would be a good choice for the role of Eliza because she is pretty, but in a simple way. It would be very easy for her to pull off the look of Eliza. Also, in the book, Eliza was very shy and insecure. Kristen Stewart would do a good job playing this part because her character, Bella, in Twilight had very similar characteristics.
2. Higgins – Ed Westwick
I think Ed Westwick would be a good person for this role because he looks like a person who would have the same personality as Higgins. In Pymgmalion, Higgins is very rude and disrespectful to Eliza. He is always yelling at her and calling her a fool. Ed Westwick can sometimes look intimidating, and he plays Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl, who has a superior and withdrawn personality.
3. Pickering – Zac Efron
I would choose Zac Efron to play Higgins because he always plays the nice and polite character. Pickering tries to teach Eliza to respect herself, which is very similar to the role Zac Efron plays in 17 Again. Also, in High School Musical he is always encouraging Gabriella, which is like what Pickering does for Eliza in the book.
4. Alfred Doolittle – Scott Patterson
I think Scott Patterson would be perfect for this role because, in Pygmalion, Alfred Doolittle seems to have a very laid back attitude. He doesn’t care about his daughter leaving him, and he just wants to mind his own business instead of sharing his money with people. In Gilmore Girls, Scott Patterson plays the role of Luke, who never wants to talk to people or get involved in town business. He is very laid back when he is raising his nephew, Jess, and hates to confront him when he does something wrong.
5. Freddy – Ryan Gosling
In the book, Freddy is the character who loves Eliza from the first time he meets her, but does not have the money to provide for her. He is a quiet character, and Eliza does not always plan to marry him. I think Ryan Gosling would be perfect to play Freddy because he has a similar role as Noah in The Notebook. Noah is a quiet and simple boy from the country, who fights to convince Allie to marry him. Ryan Gosling would be perfect to play the role of a quiet and simple person that everyone likes.
6. Mrs. Higgins – Julie Andrews
In Pygmalion, Mrs. Higgins is an elegant woman who is very polite in society, wise, kind, and offers good advice. This is very similar to Julie Andrews’s part in Princess Diaries as both a queen and grandmother. She is always giving advice to Mia, much like Mrs. Higgins gave advice to Higgins and Eliza. Also, as a queen, she is very elegant and polite.
1. Eliza- I would cast Kiera Knightly as Eliza Eliza for many reasons. I can hear in her voice the possibility for her to sound both uncivilized and elegant, depending on her role. In the text, they talk about her interesting eyes which she also has. She has played high society, such as in The Duchess, where she's had to be charming and poised. She's also had to play a rough character, such as Elizabeth Swan in the later Pirates of the Caribbean movies. You can see her hidden strength in how she talks and you can immediately see how she could command a room by walking.
2. Higgins- I would cast John McGinley as the role of Henry Higgins. 'Johnny C', as he's more commonly known, plays Dr. Cox in the tv show Scrubs. He is completely ornery and impossible every time you talk to him, but you can't help but love him as you watch the show. He takes no consideration for other people's feelings and lets no emotion out with few rare exceptions.
3. Pickering- For the character of Pickering, I would cast John Corbett. He is kind and his voice is gentle to show that he cares. He has a genial face, but does not look feminine in any way. In his role in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I can see the stage business characteristic relations between his role in the movie and Colonel Pickering.
4. Alfred Doolittle- I would have Dick Van Dyke play Alfred Doolittle. He can easily charm people with his smile, voice, and persona. Also, from Mary Poppins, I tend to think of him when I think of dustmen and chimney sweeps. His accent in that movie isn't perfect grammar, but you can still understand what he is saying and he entrances you as he speaks. With this power, it would be easy for him to grab a sly dollar or 5 off of a gentleman with such easy speech and coaxing.
5. Freddy- For the role of Freddy, I would choose Elijah Wood. He plays a troubled character in Lord of the Rings, but you can see his beauty through his pain. He is kind and shy, just as I would perceive the character of Freddy.
6. Mrs. Higgins- Julie Andrews is the only option for Mrs. Higgins. In many of the roles she has done, she plays the proper woman who comes and gets everyone into shape. In Mary Poppins she teaches the Banks children manners and how to behave and proper fun. In the Sound of Music, she is also a teacher. In The Princess Diaries, she plays the regal grandmother who teaches her granddaughter how to be a princess. She is perfectly genial, proper, lovable, harsh when necessary, and a familiar face everyone loves.
1. I think that Scarlett Johansson would play a pretty good Eliza because she would be pretty for later on in the book, and in the beginning, they could make her look poor and ugly. Also, she is a good actress, and she is able to act many different emotions and has played so many different characters, so she would be good at acting as person who starts as a poor flower girl and becomes a lady.
2. I think that Hugh Laurie would be the perfect Higgins. As House, he is annoying and rude, Just like Higgins.
3. I think that Kyle MacLachlan would be a really good Colonel Pickering. As Orson Hodge on Desperate Housewives, he plays a nice gentleman-for the most part. I think that he looks the part a little bit and the way he talks is a little how I imagined Pickering speaking.
4. I think that Dustin Hoffman would be a good Alfred Doolittle because he can be very rough around the edges, but he can turn into a gentleman, just like Alfred Doolittle, and we can see this in a lot of his role.
5. I think that Zac Efron would be a good Freddy because a lot of girls like him, and it would be for Eliza to fall in love with him.
6. Candice Burgin would be a perfect Mrs. Higgins because she plays powerful women in many of her roles. Especially in Boston Legal, she fights for her way a lot.
1. Eliza: Kate Hudson
I think that Kate Hudson, from How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, would best play Eliza because I think that she plays a desperate character well. She has a sense of vulnerability about her that you can also see in Eliza. I also think that Kate Hudson could transform herself to match the way Eliza changes.
2. Higgins: Hugh Laurie
I think that Hugh Laurie, from the television show House, would best play Higgins because he has very convincingly demonstrated through his roles a sarcastic and dry sense of humor. He can play someone who believes they are always right and someone with a very cynical point of view which I think would fit Higgins perfectly.
3. Pickering: Brad Pitt
I think that Brad Pitt, specifically from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, would fit Pickering’s role well because I think that he could successfully play an intelligent character who can be Higgins’s sidekick while also being a friend to Eliza. I think he would perfectly demonstrate a companion to Higgins and a lovable friend to Eliza.
4. Alfred Doolittle: Christopher McDonald
I think that Christopher McDonald, from Happy Gilmore, would best play Alfred Doolittle. He has displayed through numerous roles that he can play the villain well. He has showed that he can play a selfish and greedy man whose only objective is to get what he wants no matter who they hurt, like Alfred. I also think that he would be able to transform his appearance to match Alfred’s perfectly as a grungy man.
5. Freddy: Owen Wilson
I think that Owen Wilson, from Wedding Crashers, would play Freddy well because he has a sensitive side like Freddy’s. I think that Owen Wilson would be good at portraying the caring, devoted and somewhat needy character of Freddy
6. Mrs. Higgins: Bette Midler
I believe that Bette Midler, from Beaches and The First Wives Club, would be best as the role of Mrs. Higgins because she has displayed through her roles a serious, yet comical personality which is similar to Mrs. Higgins’s. Bette Midler has a maternal quality about her which I believe would match Mrs. Higgins’s critical and caring character. I think that she would bring a motherly life to Mrs. Higgins’s role.
Eliza Doolittle ~ Summer Glau
Summer Glau is a very strong independent woman. She has certain elegance from dancing most of her life and can fit the role of being noble very well.
Higgins ~ Paul Bettany
In all of his other movies Paul Bettany has played the stranger characters. He is very good at changing personalities like being intelligent and being a bully.
Pickering ~ Robin Williams
Robin Williams has a very eccentric personality and very outgoing. His talent of many voices can help portray his absentmindedness
Alfred Doolittle ~ Alan Rickman
Alan Rickman has a very glum personality who can make his character seem very suspicious.
Freddy ~ Chad Michael Murray
Chad Michael Murray can play a foolish character very well and his youth extenuates the appearance of being a fool. The fact that him and Eliza are both young can symbolize how naïve they are in what Freddy thinks is love.
Mrs. Higgin ~ Kelly Bishop
Kelly Bishop can portray a judgmental mother very well, especially due to her facial features and mother like appearance.
Eliza- Zooey Deschanel
More commonly known in independent films, Zooey Deschanel has portrayed many different characters ranging from a smart talking out of work actress to a coaxing car owner leading a young man on a long road trip across the country finding his way in life. She has even portrayed a silent street smart teenager stuck in a mental institution. Zooey's history in such a large variety of characters would make her perfect for the role of Eliza, being able to pick up her quick wit and independence to perfection.
Higgins- Christopher Eccleston
Christopher Eccleston is perfect for the role of the smarty pants professor, who really does have a good heart. He has the sardonic humor and can whip it out at you with a clever phrase right on the spot, much like Higgins.
Pickering- Jude Law
Jude Law has the handsome face good-hearted best friend role down pat. He is able to play the guy with strong influence and still be able to hide in the shadows when the true stars are performing.
Alfred Doolittle- Edward Norton
Edward Norton is able to play the sleazy grimy father who only connects with his daughter after finding out that she has some connections. He has played in roles portraying the "bad guy" very well and would be able to show of his skill of being the guy we can't stand.
Freddy- Gaspard Ulliel
Not commonly known in America, Gaspard is a very popular actor across the ocean. He has the cute boyish face normally thought of with Freddy. He can easily depict the middle class boy who falls hopelessly in love with Eliza, grabbing the audiences attention, with his adorable smile.
Mrs. Higgins- Veronica Lake
Veronica Lake is an actress who knows how to make for a strong leader in her character. Veronica's real life persona is calm and rational, just like Mrs. Higgins is. Mrs. Higgins was the only one who didn't like Higgins' idea with Eliza, and she was the one, that people turned to when the project began to go sour. Her appearance screams motherly authority and Veronica can make for a strong willed character just like Mrs. Higgins is.
1. Eliza- Natalie Portman
When I think of Eliza, I think an actress with big expressive eyes and a delicate appearance is needed. Natalie Portman fits this. Also, she should have an attitude, and Natalie also fits this requirement because of the video short she did on SNL where she rapped. I think Eliza's defiant spirit needs to contrast with her fragile looks.
2. Higgins- Bill Murray
When I think of Higgins, I think of someone kind of gruff and kind of vulgar. He has a cynical sense of humor and a strong personality that is needed to trump Eliza's. I don't really think of Higgins as being particularly handsome and Murray fits that.
3. Pickering- Richard Gere
He has a lot of experience acting and seems like a kind and gentle person, perfect to balance Higgins. He looks like a proper gentleman.
4. Alfred Doolittle-Russell Brand (English Actor/ Comedian- hosted the MTV music awards 2008)
I think that Brand would be good to play Eliza's father because he stands out. He is strange, and I think he could easily pull off some of Mr. Doolittle's odd views on morality, life and society and make them totally believeable. I always thought of Doolittle as being kind of insane, and Brand definitely fits this.
5. Freddy- Rupert Grint (the redhead from Harry Potter)
I think he would be a good fit because, after all, he is a redhead and every movie could use a redhead (just saying) and he gives off the vibe of being young and naive. He kind of reminds me of a deer in the headlights and in his acting, comes off as someone who is not particularly intelligent. I think he is needed because Freddy is supposed to be a complete fool.
6. Mrs. Higgins-Judi Dench (the boss lady in the James Bond series, among many other roles)
She gives off a strong personality and when I think of Mrs. Higgins, I think of someone who is kind of commanding and a you-know-what. She gives off this vibe and has a very regal air which is needed to play a woman of high social class.
1. Eliza: Kiera Knightley
-I think Kiera would play Eliza best because she has a very sweet personaility, yet she can she is not afraid to establish herself and hold her own.
2.Higgins: Brad Pitt
- LIke Higgins, Brad Pitt has a snoody attitude, yet a charming personaility. He can also portray just about any role.
3.Pickering: Colling firth
-His flamboyant and fun attitude would be fun to portray the in a way wittiness of Pickering
4.Alfred Doolittle: Jack Black
-The dirtiness of Alfred reminds me of pretty much every character Jack Black has ever played.
5. Freddy: Zac Efron
-Both men are extremely charming and know the proper way to swoon a lady.
6.Mrs. Higgins: Meryl Streep-
-Meryl can play such an elegant lady and has the right qualities to preform a motherly role
1. Eliza - Miley Cryus
I think Miley Cyru would be a good fit for Eliza, because she has an accent that will help her protray Eliza. With her role in her show you see that she can has no problem switching from one part to another.
2. Higgins - Daniel Radcliffe
Daniel would make good a Higgins because he seems to have a certain qualitly's that Higgins has. He pronounces all his words very definitely, and with confidence when ever he is playing a part or in an interview.
3. Pickering - Victor Graber
Pickerng is a very powerful man but at is easy influeced and manpulilated by Higgins Vitor Graber would be able to play him. He would be good because he can play strong roles and he can play funny roles. It shows that he can play weaker at times which is just like Pickering.
4. Alfred Doolittle - Will Ferral
Will Ferral can play a slacker, which is clearly what Alfred Doolittle is.
5. Freddy - Chace Crawford
Freddy and Chace are both kind of young. I imagined Freddy as cute so Chace would be perfect for that. They both are or play characters that have fallen madly in love with a girl.
6. Mrs. Higgins - Meryl Streep
Meryl seems like a motherly type. Higggins always comes to his mother for advice and I think that is something Meryl Streep would be able to play.
1.Eliza- Kiera Knightly
I think that Kiera Knightly would play Eliza Doolittle very well because she is very strong in her acting, and she can play a strong roles, but she can also portray many different emotions like when Eliza lashes out on Higgins.
2. Higgins- Tom Hanks
I think that Tom Hanks would be a good choice to play Higgins because he can play serious, sarcastic, and funny roles. Higgins is also an older man than Eliza, and he is older than Kiera Knightly. Higgins's character is in many ways serious and sarcastic.
3. Pickering- Ian Holm
It think that Ian Holm can play Pickering very well, because some of his roles can be seen as a very gentle man, and in many ways Pickering is a very nice man, paying for Eliza's lessons.
4. Alfred Doolittle- Timothy Spall
I think that Timothy Spall would be very good for the role of Alfred Doolittle. He is able to play man who is very sly and sneaky, exactly like the character of Alfred Doolittle. Alfred Doolittle cons money out of Higgins, just like Timothy Spall's character tries to save his life in Harry Potter.
5. Freddy- Chris Pine
I think that Chris Pine would be a great choice for the role of Freddy, because he can play the romantic type, as shown in Princess Diaries 2.
6. Mrs. Higgins- Helen Mirren
Helen Mirren would be a great Mrs. Higgins because all of her roles have been very strong and Mrss. Higgin's role is no exception. She is a very witty figure in the story, and Helen Mirren would fit the role perfectly.
-Erin O
1. Eliza- Anne Hathaway
I think that Anne Hathaway would be great playing the character of Eliza. Just like in the movie “The Princess Diaries” she was a clumsy, messy, shy, insecure and unclean girl, who was transformed into a beautiful, yet graceful young woman.
2. Higgins- Judd Nelson
I think that Judd Nelson would be great playing the character of Higgins. Just like in the movie “The Breakfast Club” he was a rude, sarcastic man, but when he needed to be, was a pleasant and somewhat kind hearted man.
3. Pickering- Brad Pitt
I think that Brad Pitt would be great playing the character of Pickering. Just like in the movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, he would be able to play an intelligent character who can be Higgins’s partner while also being Eliza’s friend.
4. Alfred Doolittle- Jack Black
I think that Jack Black would be great playing the character of Alfred Doolittle. Jack Black is very shabby and has the qualities that could make him seem shady, just as Alfred Doolittle appears in his role. Jack Black is also very funny, like Alfred Doolittle tried to be in the book.
5. Freddy- Jake Gyllenhaal
I think that Jake Gyllenhaal would be great playing the character of Freddy. Just like in the movie “Bubble Boy” he fell in love and did everything he could to be with his love. He is boyishly handsome with a genuine smile and a big heart. He was always bossed around by his parents, as Freddy is by his mother and sister.
6. Mrs. Higgins- Helen Mirren
I think that Helen Mirren would be great playing the character of Mrs. Higgins. Just like in the movie “The Queen”, playing the part of the Queen of England she is very elegant and polite. She is able to take charge and run things the way she wants it to be and the way it needs to be. She can also act as the loving, caring person you could always go to.
1. Eliza- Kiera Knightley
-I think Kiera would play Eliza best because she has a wonderful personaility. At the same time she is not afraid to speak her mind just like Eliza.
2. Higgins- Hugh Laurie
-I think that Hugh Laurie would be a great Higgins. Like the character he plays in house which is somewhat a rude character would fit Higgins perfect.
3. Pickering-Brad Pitt
- I think that Brad Pitt, would fit Pickering’s role well because I think that he can be an intelligent character. He also can displays the characteristics of a good friend to both Eliza and Higgins.
4. Alfred Doolittle- Dustin Hoffman
- I think that Dustin is the perfect Alfred because of the actor he is. He can be tough when he wants to be tough. But he can also turn into the perfect gentlemen when needed. Just like Alfred
5. Freddy- Zac Efron
- I think that Zac Efron would be a good Freddy. The reason is that many girls like Zac, and that he has qualities that a lot of girls like, and it would be easy for him to fall in love with Eliza.
6. Mrs. Higgins- Meryl Streep.
- Meryl Streep reminds me so much of Mrs. Higgins. The way that she deals with things in her life, and controls them the right way. She is also an older women, and has a perfect fitting personality for Mrs. Higgins
eliza- anne hathaway because a perfect example is from princess diaries and how much she transformed and became a whole different person but yet still the same in ways. this relates so much to eliza and how she changed
higgins- hugh laurie, because of the way he comes off to people as that snotty kind of person, but yet funny in a way
pickering- johnny depp, because he is truly a gentleman but sometimes may come off as otherwise in some of his crazy characters and still knows how to take care of people although he may not seem to be capable of doing that sometimes
alfred doolittle- reminds me of scrooge, because in the story he (alfred) tries to get money out of everything and the same with scrooge, thats all hes ever trying to make and focused on.
freddy- michael cera, because he seems to have that sort of curious question in his face when u look and talk to him and thats how i think of freddy. As someone that noone is really sure of but could be a perfect match for someone and he doesnt really always seem to make sense at times but he pulls himself through
mrs. higgins- julie andrews, because of the way that she holds herself and the way she presents herself, in a way that is similar to mrs. higgins
1. Eliza- Alexis Bledel. I believe that she would be a good Eliza because of her young, naturally beautiful appearance. Alexis has a sarcastic sense of humor like Eliza, and can also be very sensitive like Eliza also. She is very hard working in " Gilmore Girls", and in " The sisterhood of the traveling pants", and a very smart young lady. She would potray the role very nicely I believe.
2. Higgins-Jackie Chan- I think that Jackie can do anything. He would be well at teaching Eliza very well, and I think he would mix well with all the other characters. He demands respect, like Higgins, and would play him very fine.
3. Pickering-Chris Tucker
I think he would compliment Higgins well . They are always together Rush Hour movie, and have great chemistry. He can play the friend that agrees with Higgins on everything, and yet is oh so likeable. He would be able to portray a loving man, when he reaches out to Eliza, and goes against what Higgins likes.
4. Alfred Doolittle-Adam Sandler
Adam can play every character well. He could play the dirty Mr. Doolittle at the beginning, ad at the end he would be able to play the richer Doolittle very well, and probably add some comedy in it.
5. Freddy-Chad Michael Murray . Chad Michael Murray is a young handsome man like Freddy, with a big heart. He can play it because like Freddy, who has been in search for a beautiful, and lovely woma , and follows around Eliza, his true love, Chad, in a "Cinderella Story" is in search for his true love and will do anything to find his dream girl. I think the audience would love his charming looks, and would want Eliza to get her in the end.
6. Mrs. Higgins- I think Julie Andrews would play the role very nicely. She usually portrays a proper woman. She has the appearance, and speech of an upper-class lady. She is wise, proper, lovely, and can be intimidating, and would play Mrs. Higgins wonderfully.
1. Eliza-Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway has played the role as girls who change from one simple, common life to that of a greater and more refined life, just as Eliza changes into a "princess". This means she's suited for the role of Eliza, which is similar to her past roles.
2. Higgins-Hugh Laurie
Hugh Laurie has played the role of House, a sarcastic and humorous old man. He doesn't generally think about the feelings of others, just as Higgins doesn't really consider those of Eliza. Neither have particularly good manners either, for they are both often rude to people. Since Hugh Laurie is used to this type of role, he would be a great Higgins.
3. Pickering-Michael Cane
In his role as the butler in The Dark Night, Michael Cane serves as a man who provides advice to others, and he cares for others. Pickering gives insight to both Eliza and Higgins. He also shows his concern for Eliza and treats others as his equals. Therefore, I think that the close similarities between these characters' actions are a good indication that Michael Cane would play a good Pickering.
4. Alfred Doolittle-Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp has the ability to portray different personalities, no matter how odd they are. Also, in Pirates of the Caribbean, Johnny plays the role of someone who can talk his way out of things easily. Alfred Doolittle is also an odd and dirty man who also can talk his way into getting money from other people.
5. Freddy-Shia LaBeouf
In Shia's previous roles, he has often portrayed a young character who isn't always sure of himself. In these roles, he has also become infatuated with one girl and spent a long time trying to talk to her and know her. This is similar to how Freddy acts toward Eliza, so I think that because Shia is accustomed to this type of role, he would work perfectly.
6. Mrs. Higgins-Julie Andrews
Julie Andrews has a caring quality about her. She has manners and cares about her presence toward other people, just as Mrs. Higgins does; therefore, she Julie Andrews would be an adequate Mrs. Higgins.
1. Eliza: Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway would be a good character for Eliza because her role in Princess Diaries is similar to Eliza's. In Princess Diaries she is a normal girl, sort of the outcast in her school who later becomes that she really is a princess. She must learn to act like one and go through all the challenges it would take to become one just as Eliza did. I think Hathaway was good in that movie so she would be able to fit this part perfectly also.
2. Higgens: Spencer Pratt
Spencer Pratt is sort of a villian in the reality show The Hills. From what it seems in the show he is rude to most of the peopel on the show. In some episiodes though, you can tell he truely cares for Heidi, his girlfriend and can show that he somewhere deep down there has a heart in him, just as Higgins does at the end of Pygmalion.
3. Pickering: George Clooney
I believe that George Clooney would be good in the roll of Pickering becuse George Clooney is an older man, just as Pickering and he seems wise and polite. He seems classy and with good etiquette. He seems like a man who would treat everyone with respect but still have some authority in it all.
4. Alfred Doolittle: Danny DeVito
Danny DeVito, the father in Matilda among other characters seem like a con man who would do well in this role. I think that Alfred Doolittle is some what a con man in some way he only does things for his own benifit, such as when he sold his daughter for 5 pounds, he is also never satisfied with what he has, just as the father in Matilda who would con people into selling his messed up cars and was never happy with Matilda even though she was a perfect daughter.
5. Freddy: Michael Cera
Michael Cera the actor in Nick and Norah's Infinate Playlist and Juno seems like a perfect fit for Freddy. Freddy in my eyes is nothing special, he is just an average guy who falls madly in love with a girl. Michael Cera in Nick and Norah's is a sort of awkward guy who begins to really like a girl after only spending one night with her. Similarly, in Juno he is an awkward nice guy who falls in love with a girl but is nothing special just an average guy. The character of Freddy seems like it would fit along with the characters he usually plays.
6. Mrs. Higgins: Blythe Danner
Blythe Danner is the mother in Meet the Parents. She seems like the sensible one in the family who knows what she is talking about when everyone else is caught up with everything else. She puts in her opinions on things just as Mrs. Higgins does.
1. Eliza -- Jena Malone
Jena Malone has the vulnerable look and I think she would be able to emulate Liza's vulnerability.
2. Higgins -- Hugh Laurie
Hugh Laurie would make a great Higgins because he portrays a snarky and sarcastic sense of humor just like Higgins.
3. Pickering -- Robert Sean Leonard
I think that in House, Hugh Laurie and Robert Sean Leonard make a phenomenal pair. Pickering goes along with most anything Higgins does and Pickering always has Higgins' back just like House and Wilson. I think that he and Hugh Laurie would have great chemistry that would make their characters in Pygmalion even better.
4. Alfred Doolittle -- Robin Williams
Robin Williams seems like he's the right kind of "crazy" to do Doolittle. Robin Williams is the kind of person that can take on any character. I also think he could do Doolittle's character well because Doolittle was the kind of person that would do anything for a buck just like the Wizard in August Rush which Robin Williams played so well.
5. Freddy -- Simon Woods (Bingley in Pride & Prejudice)
I think Freddy is a young and naive boy. Because Bingley was nearly identical to Freddy, he could portray Freddy flawlessly just like he did with Bingley.
6. Mrs. Higgins -- Joan Plowright
I think that Mrs. Higgins has a warm personality towards Liza and scolding personality towards Higgins which I think Joan Plowright would be able to portray best.
-Eliza- Leighton Meester
Leighton would be a perfect Eliza because she is so composed and talented that she coudl pull off Eliza's multiple personalities in the play. She also has done British films so she woudl be able to hold a high society English accent. She also has displayed her ability to convincingly portray hysteria in her other roles so we know she can play Eliza while she is on the streets. She is also very pretty with big dark eyes so that fits Eliza's character description without changing anything about her.
-Higgins- MIchael Caine
When i read this playwrite i invisioned a pompous older gentleman with a haughty accent to play Higgins. Michael is just the man to cover those. He has the natural thick British accent and in some other roles has been able to pull off the pomposity that this role would need. He also is not intimidating enough to make you believe he woudl ever really harm Eliza, but just quick-tempered.
-Pickering- Hugh Grant
Hugh Grant, as the more lovable Mr. Pickering would be able to bring humor to my version of Pygmalion. Mr. Pickering is the one who is kind and gentlemanlike to Eliza and is also more liked by people whom Higgens and Pickering meet. With Hugh Grant he woudl be able to be the kind Englishman as well as bring a fresh sense of humor to the otherwise not comical play.
-Alfred Doolittle- George Clooney
Though he plays more main roles, i think that George Clooney woudl play well in the snide role of Mr. Doolittle. He was in "Oh Brotehr Where Art Though" and the way that he played that character, coudl transfer over into this role it woudl be a perfect match. the role would include him being cunning and complainy as well as somewhat mad and decieving; all things that George Clooney has been able to do in other roles.
-Freddy- Cody Longo
Freddy is a poor boy that does not make much, but Eliza is in love with him. so, in my version of the movie i woudl cast Cody Longo. First, because he is beautiful so it would make people want the two characters to be together. Second, he woudl be perfect because he is new to the acting world, so he still has the raw edge of an aspiring actor so he would be willing to play any role very well.
-Mrs. Higgins- Meryl Streep
Meryl streep is the obvious choice for Mrs. Higgins. The entire time i was reading the playwrite i imagined her as Mrs. Higgins. in every role she plays, she does so with poise and elegance of upper society. she is one of the few great actresses left in hollywood and fills the role of sophiticated and controlling while still being able to hold the motherly quality toward Higgins.
1. Eliza- Katie Holmes
Eliza is very ignorant and hysterical in the beginning. At the end she becomes proper, independent, and confident. Holmes would fit this role because she can play very crazy roles, like in "Mad Money" and she can also play sentimental roles like in "First Daughter". Also, both Eliza and Holmes are around the same age and have dark brown hair.
2. Higgins- Simon Cowell
Higgins is a rude, self-confident, middle-aged man, just like the real Simon Cowell. Also, both Higgins and Cowell have a hidden softer side that is not usually shown. Plus, Cowell has a British accent.
3. Pickering- David Stratiain
Pickering is very proper and polite man of middle to older age. I also think that Pickering has sort of a intelligent look to him. When Stratiain played the President of the college in "We Are Marshall", he used most of these qualities to play that part. Stratiain also has a intelliegent look about him.
4. Alfred Doolittle- Kelsey Grammer
Mr. Doolittle is an ignorant, and carefree in the beginning, but in the end he has to face reality. What most people would find terrific, he finds terrible- wealth. Kelsey Grammer would fit this role perfectly. Both are around the same ages also.
5. Freddy- Christian Bale
Freddy is a carefree, frivolous, romantic person. He does not think much about the future. This character is very similar to Teddy from "Little Women", played by Bale. Although, Bale is well-known for his role in "The Dark Night", I believe Bale could play Freddy perfectly, showing his lighter side.
6. Mrs. Higgins- Mary Tyler Moore
Mrs. Higgins is very proper and gets emabarressed by her son's bad manners. She is compassionate to Eliza's situation and helps to hold her ground as a woman. Mary Tyler Moore has played in numerous shows and movies, creating both serious and laid back personalities. Both are around the same age.
Eliza- Dakota Fanning
Although one may say that Dakota is too young to pay the role of Eliza, I disagree. Dakota has had many experiences playing much more mature and responsible characters than her age. Dakota also gives off an innocence , just as Eliza does. I think that Dakota would be able to show how Eliza is still young but also mature at the same time due to what she has gone through.
Mrs. Higgins
Mrs Higgins- Maggie Smith
Maggie Smith, from the Harry Potter movies, I believe would be perfect for the role of Mrs. Higgins. In the Harry Potter series, she plays a woman who is strict, but also nice to the students at the same time. This is just how Mrs. Higgins acts towards her son, Henry Higgins. For example, the scene when Henry first comes, she is upset that he came so unexpectedly, but yet still allows him to stay and enjoy the company that came. I think her experiences with the Harry Potter movies allows her to be a great actress for this particular role.
Freddy- T.R. Knight
T.R. Knight is most well known for being in the hit series Grey's Anatomy. I think that this role really gives him the opportunity to be a perfect Freddy. In Grey's Anatomy he is sometimes pushed to the side and thought lesser of. This is exactly how Freddy is treated in the novel. He is pushed around by his mother and sister in the very first scene and considered useless, and also Higgins finds it amusing when Eliza says she would marry him. He is the underdog.
Doolittle- Al Pacino
Al Pacino would be perfect for this role because he would be able to act greedy and though he has no morals. His experience in simone I believe would really help him portray the role better. In Simone, when he becomes obsessed with Simone and is taken to the police station, his image there is how I imagine Doolittle to look like. Almost lazy and unclean, but can clean up and look respectable as well.
Higgins- Alan Rickman
Again, another character from the Harry Potter series, I think that Alan Rickman would be perfect for Higgins. Alan in the Harry Potter series is very straight forward and blunt about what he wants. He almost has an eerie sense to him, but is very controlling. This is exactly how I imagine Higgins to be.
Pickering- Colin Firth
I thin that Colin Firth would be great for this role because Pickering seems more of the laid back, chill kind of guy and that is how I imagine Colin Firth to be. Pickering is the opposite of Higgins in a sense, and I think that it would be very visible to the people watching the movie the differences of Higgins and Pickering, but also the connection they share.
1. Eliza-Hannah Montana because she is smart and pretty but yet at the same time she has a soft gentle demeanor to her that makes are the worth while like Eliza who has it smart but is still grounded just as Hannah is portrayed in real life as a very down to earth type of girl
2. Higgins- Will Smith because of his sense of humor that was really portrayed in the in the television show fresh prince. You were truly able to see his overbearing sense of humor that stretched over into all aspects and his full of himself attitude that at times seems like it would never stop
3. Pickering-Leonard De Caprio because he is a well dressed fellow and no matter what he always cleans up real nice. Also because of his delightful face that will light up a room no matter where he goes. I think that Leonardo could do this with no trouble at all
4. Alfred Doolittle-Johnny Depp because he has experience in playing coniving people, who are just
So into money such as pirates of the Caribbean. Even though in pirates of the Caribbean it wasn't money he was after it was a treasure which I think is very much comparable to gold. Alfred is so a man greedy only for money, so with the experience
5. Freddy- George Coloney would be the best match because he is know for his romantic roles
and his masculine sec appeal. Since, Freddy is similar to the type of guys that he has acted out in the past I don’t think he would have any problem playing him, actually I think it would be the prefect match
6. Mrs. Higgins-Ellen for the Ellen show would be the best I think for this part, seeing that Mrs. Higgins is a very bold and striking women just as Ellen is in real life. Ellen has a fun personality but yet it is very strong with a determine will. This is the same for Mrs. Higgins who handle situation with such eloquent style and with a plan in the back of her mind that is usually undetected. But mainly because of the strong personality Ellen has I think she will be able to play a strong willed character as Mrs. Higgins.
1. Eliza- Anne Hathaway
Just as Eliza drastically changes throughout the novel Anne Hathaway in the movie "Princess Diaries," plays a teenage girl who transforms from a dorky, awkward, clumsy girl, to a confident, gracefully woman.
2. Higgins- Hugh Laurie
Higgins and Hugh Laurie who plays a doctor on the television show "House" have the same exact character traits. They are both sarcastic, cocky, smart, and have poor manners while they are still harmless men and good at heart.
3. Pickering- George Clooney
I would choose George Clooney because in most of the roles he plays, he is wise, classy and has good manners just as Pickering. He is also an older man who is very respectful of others.
4. Alfred Doolittle- Adam Sandler
I think Adam Sandler could play the part of Alfred well because he would have no problem doing and saying strange things. He also has a very unique and eccentric personality just like the characters that Adam Sandler plays.
5. Freddy- Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling would be the perfect actor to play Freddy. Just as in the movie "The Notebook," Ryan plays a boy who falls in love with a girl which is just like Freddy falling in love with Eliza. In the notebook when the girl he's in love with moves away, he sends her letters every day for a year just like Freddy in the story who sends Eliza letters to try to court her.
6. Mrs. Higgins- Julie Andrews
I would chose Julie Andrews to play Mrs. Higgins because she fits the personality type of being a wise, confident, and proper lady. She is also an older woman like Mrs. Higgins.
1. Eliza – Hilary Swank
I choose Hilary Swank to play the role of Eliza because the character she plays in Million Dollar Baby is similar to Eliza. Hilary played a young and shy girl, Maggie Fitzgerald, who comes from a lower class and decides to make a difference in her life. She makes her difference through boxing. She gets a trainer to help her reach her goal of being a boxer. This sounds like Eliza as she wants to transform herself from a cute, little flower girl to a sophisticated woman. Hilary would be a great fit as Eliza.
2. Higgins – George Clooney
George Clooney was the first person that comes to my mind when I think of Higgins. George can pull off the role of Higgins because he can play a man with brilliance but have a dark side to him at the same time. Even though he is a much older man like Higgins, he is still a very attractive man. He could also play the role of being a good teacher as Higgins was to Eliza.
3. Pickering – Leonardo DiCaprio
I think Leonardo DiCaprio would make a perfect Pickering because he portrays Freddy’s personality with his character, Jack Dawson. His character is polite, humorous, and most of all he respects women. Freddy treats Eliza with respect as does Leonardo’s character and his lover, Rose. Leonardo’s character in the movie shows Rose he can treat her with more respect than her fiancé ever will. This sounds a lot like Pickering’s situation. His treatment of Eliza is more civilized than the way Higgins treats her.
4. Alfred Doolittle – Robert De Niro
When I think of Alfred, I think of a sly person, yet a gentleman. I choose Robert De Niro to be Alfred Doolittle because he always plays the man who is greedy and lives his life around making money, even if it means cheating off his family or friends. Doolittle doesn’t really care about his daughter. He is even willing to sell his daughter to make a few pounds. Money is the only thing he cares about. Robert De Niro can play this part for sure. He seems like the person who would be able to be sneaky to get money from anyone.
5. Freddy – Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling, in my opinion, fits just right as Freddy. Gosling plays Noah Calhoun in the Notebook. His character reminds me of Freddy. Both are handsome and attractive young men. Noah falls hard for a beautiful young woman. Noah is a very free-living person who does not have his future planned out. Freddy is the same way. It was be an easy job for Gosling to play a native and love-sick character like Freddy.
6. Mrs. Higgins – Jennifer Rhodes
I think Jennifer Rhodes would make a great Mrs. Higgins. Jennifer plays a role in the TV series, Charmed, as a mother and grandmother of three sisters. She is the woman of the house and always makes sure that everything is in its right place. She also keeps everyone in line and teachers her daughter and grand-daughters to fulfill their destinies. Jennifer’s character is the one who everyone seeks advice from. Just like Mrs. Higgins’ son comes to her whenever he needs her help.
1. For Eliza I immediately thought of Kiera Knightly because she is an actress how can play many roles; she can be sweet and shy but also she can be a very powerful actress. She also has the looks, she has cricked teeth which remind me of someone of a poorer class in that time period but also when she is dressed up she looks very elegant.
2. For the role of Higgins I would cast Hugh Laurie, the way he comes off as a person in his television show, House, is a very snudy, cocky person who is full of himself but has a right because he knows what he's doing and what he is talking about. At the same time he can show he cares for someone or something.
3. For Pickering I would choose to cast Peter Gallagher because he is very good looking and handsome but he is fatherly and kind as shown in his tv series the oc.
4. I immediately thought of Rodney Dangerfield becasue he is so goofy looking and he shows his humor in caddyshack and other movies and when I think of Alfred I think of an old man.
5. I would cast Freddy as tobey maguire because he is goofy looking in a way but very caring.
6. diane keaton would be an amaing Mrs. Higgins because she shows she is very motherly in the movie Because I said so.
1. Eliza- Anne Hathaway: Like in the Princess Diaries Anne had to go through similar changes and in this character it wouldn't be to hard because she knows what she is doing.
2.Higgins- Leonardo Di Caprio: In the Aviator Leonardo was able to transform himself into a snotty person who is afraid of germs (whom eventually becomes psycho). In the Aviator, he takes no consideration on how his actions might affect others. This movie is proof that Leonardo can pull off the role as Higgins.
3.Pickering- James Marsden: Seen in the movies The Notebook, 27 Dresses, Hairspray and many others. Has the personality to accomplish the role as Pickering. As you can see the 3 movies above are completely different; one a love story, a musical, and the other a comedy. James Marsden is a "go-with-the-flow" type of guy. Very laid back which makes him very likeable.
4.Alfred Doolittle- Will Ferrell: Ferrell has been in many movies (mostly comedies). This would be a great expierment to see what he could do out of his comfort zone. In Talladega Nights and Blades of Glory he was able to fit the role of a scruffy, dirty, cocky man. These are all qualities that Alfred and Will both possess.
5.Freddy- Robert Pattinson: Freddy falls in love with Eliza the first time he sees her, kind of like the movie Twilight (in which he starred in). He was able to fall in love with Bella even though there was a barrier between them. Just like Freddy and Eliza.
6.Mrs. Higgins- Julie Andrews: In the Princess Diaries and Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews shows guidance to those who look up to her such as Mia, in the Princess Diaries and the whole neighborhood when she comes to be a nanny, in Mary Poppins. She is the number one person (in both of these movies) that supplies advice. Julie Andrews as Mrs. Higgins would truly be a great success.
1. Eliza- Ann Hathaway becasue in the movie the devil wears prada she starts the job wearing clothes that don't really make her a good part for the job but as her job continues she starts dressing more mature and transitions into more proper and nicer dressed. Also how in Princess Diaries she goes from the nerd to the princess.
2. Higgins- James Marsden mostly in the movie 27 dresses. In the movie he doesn't even know her he just figures he knows her and kinda takes control of her by taking her calandar book and taking control of him. He may seem like he cares for her but I feel like he really doesn't like how he even thought about writing a story about her without even asking her then he gives the story to his boss. He may have asked her not to run it but he should have known she wouldn't care what he said. Later she finally gains his respect by changing.
3. Pickering-Richard Harris because he is like kinda rich like Pickering is he is more powerful though being like the head of the school. Mostly he is like Pickering though because he is a very big father figure towards Harry and Ron and makes them feel good for the decisions they make even if some of the teachers get mad at them. He is just a great support person for the students.
4. Alfred Doolittle- I compare him to the father from the movie take the lead with Antonio Banderas. Its mostly his attitude that is like Alfred. He is a heavy drinker they aren't a very wealthy family and their son works really hard to keep the family going and like while he goes into the fridge there isn't any food so he asks his mother what she did with the money he gave her for food and she informs him that his father took it for alcohol. He doesn't really care about much but money or alcohol.
5. Freddy- He reminds me of Luke Mably from the prince and me. In the movie he is of royal class and you would expect him to find someone of his class like Freddy would try and find someone of middle class but in the prince and me he gets a total farm chick who when shes home from school helps her family out on the farm. so he kinda went down a level but he doesnt care because he is madly in love with her just like Freddy loves Eliza
6. Mrs. Higgins- Helen Mirren in National Treasure the second movie. Because she hates when her son is always getting into these huge treasure hunts and she really just wants him to stop because she feels he will get into trouble someday but she still helps him when he comes for help trying to figure out a clue to find the treasure.
